Is Your Child Literate and Numerate, or Just Scraping Through?

Is Your Child Literate and Numerate, or Just Scraping Through?

If you are reading this and feeling disheartened, I want you to take a deep breath. You aren’t alone.

Whether your child is struggling with school refusal, navigating a disability, or simply seems "lost" in a system that feels like it’s moving too fast, I see you. As a teacher, I’ve sat in those classrooms. I’ve seen the emails about behaviour and academic gaps. I’m here to tell you: It is okay to feel that the current system isn't enough.

The Core of the Crisis

We live in a world where some say basic skills aren't as necessary as they used to be. I disagree. I believe reading, writing, and arithmetic are the ultimate forms of communication. Without them, our children aren't just missing grades, they are losing their ability to navigate the world with confidence.

I want to ask you three honest questions about your child (ideally by Year 2 or 3):

  1. Reading: Can they pick up a simple text and read it with a sense of smoothness or is every other word a mountain to climb?

  2. Writing: Can they put a simple idea from their head onto paper, using mostly correct spelling, at a speed that feels natural?

  3. Arithmetic: Do they actually understand numbers and how they work (place value) or are they just relying on memory and counting on fingers?

A Moment of Truth

If your child is hitting Year 2 or 3 and cannot do these three simple things, it is not okay with me.

The school system might tell you they’ll "catch up" or that "every child learns differently." While the latter is true, these three skills are the floor, not the ceiling.

Now, I have to ask: Is it okay with you?

  • If the answer is yes, then you can keep rolling on as you are.

  • If the answer is no, it’s time to start doing something different.

Let’s Build a New Path Together

Addressing this doesn't have to cost a fortune. It doesn't require expensive tutors or high-end software. It does, however, requires an investment of time and intention. I want to help you bridge that gap. I’m sharing free guidance, answering your questions, and breaking down these skills into manageable pieces through my videos and webpage. You can find these resources on my Facebook Page, Website or YouTube.

To help me give me some guidance on what you need and where to go next please let me know what is the one thing your child is struggling with most right now?
