Phonemic Awarenes

Phonemic awareness is the foundation of learning to read — it’s the ability to hear and work with the sounds in spoken words before connecting them to letters. Building this skill helps children recognise patterns in language and prepares them for confident decoding later on.

These phonological awareness activities focus on compound word deletion, where students listen to a whole word and then say it again without one part (for example, sunset without sun becomes set). This simple step develops the ability to notice and manipulate parts of words — the very beginning of true phonemic awareness.
